TryGetColumn Method

Overview

Attempts to retrieve column metadata by column name without throwing exceptions. This is the safe alternative to the table column indexer when the schema may vary across server versions, feature flags, or optional modules.

Returns true and outputs IColumnMetadata when the column exists; otherwise returns false and outputs null.

Declaration

/// <summary>
/// Attempts to retrieve the metadata for the specified column.
/// </summary>
/// <param name="columnName">The name of the column to find.</param>
/// <param name="columnMetadata">When this method returns true, contains the metadata for the specified column if found, otherwise null.</param>
/// <returns>True if the metadata for the specified column is found; otherwise, false.</returns>
public bool TryGetColumn(string columnName, out IColumnMetadata? columnMetadata)

Namespace and Assembly

Namespace: PocoDataSet.ObservableData
Assembly: PocoDataSet.ObservableData.dll

Usage Example

// 1. Create observable dataset
IObservableDataSet observableDataSet = new ObservableDataSet();

// 2. Create Product table (dynamic schema scenario)
IObservableDataTable productObservableDataTable = observableDataSet.AddNewTable("Product");
productObservableDataTable.AddColumn("Id", DataTypeNames.INT32);
productObservableDataTable.AddColumn("Name", DataTypeNames.STRING);

// Optional column: only present for some customers / versions
// productObservableDataTable.AddColumn("Sku", DataTypeNames.STRING);

// 3. Safely read schema-dependent logic
if (productObservableDataTable.TryGetColumn("Sku", out IColumnMetadata? skuColumnMetadata))
{
    // Process SKU column metadata and show SKU field in UI
}
